GEO vs SEO: How to Appear in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity Answers

Samuel Martínez, 29 April 2026. SEO and GEO. 7 min read. Translated from the Spanish original.

SEO in 2026 is GEO. How to get your business cited in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers, with tactics that work in 2026.

SEO in 2026 is GEO. Generative Engine Optimization. The search engine is no longer a list of 10 blue links with ads at the top. It is a direct answer that cites 3 sources and ends the conversation. If your business does not appear in those citations, it does not exist for a growing slice of qualified traffic that no longer reaches Google.

This guide explains what is changing, which tactics work, and how to position your site for LLMs without abandoning the classic SEO that still delivers.

TL;DR

What GEO is and how it differs from classic SEO

Classic SEO optimises for Google: keywords, backlinks, Core Web Vitals, intent matching. The goal is to appear in the top 3 of the SERP.

GEO optimises for LLMs: ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude with web access. The goal is to be cited in the generated answer.

Key differences:

DimensionClassic SEOGEO
Ranking unitPage URLEntity + fact + citation
Authority signalBacklinks + DAVerifiable E-E-A-T + authorship
Preferred structureH1-H6 + keywordsStructured data + declarative sentences
Frequency of changeWeekly crawlVariable indexing depending on source
Click-through25-35% top 33-8% citations in answer
ConversionVariableHigh (intent already qualified)

Click-through is lower in GEO, but the quality of the lead is far higher. The user has read your brand inside an AI answer that has already filtered out the noise.

How LLMs work when they look for information

An LLM has two modes of operation when it answers:

Training data

The model answers from what it learned in its training corpus. Typical cutoff: 6-18 months ago. Here, sites with historical authority, a high volume of mentions and stable factual content win. It cannot be manipulated in real time.

RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation)

The model searches the web at that moment, ingests the most relevant pages, and generates an answer citing sources. Here, well-structured sites with correct schema and machine-readable content win. This is the mode used by Perplexity, ChatGPT Search and Gemini Live.

GEO focuses almost exclusively on RAG, because it is the only thing you can act on in the short term.

Tactics that DO work

Strong entity recognition

Define who you are precisely. Schema.org Organization, Person, Product, Service. If your brand does not appear as a named entity with clear properties, LLMs will not reference you.

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Organization",
  "name": "STAKKER SYSTEMS",
  "url": "https://stakker.es",
  "founder": {
    "@type": "Person",
    "name": "Samuel Martinez Garcia"
  },
  "areaServed": "ES",
  "knowsAbout": ["AI automation", "voice agents", "chatbots"]
}
</script>

llms.txt in the root

A file at /llms.txt with a structured summary of your site for LLMs. It works like a robots.txt, but for context. Include key URLs, a description of the brand and areas of expertise. The crawlers from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google respect it.

Verifiable E-E-A-T

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. LLMs penalise content without clear authorship. Every article should have:

Declarative, citable sentences

LLMs extract sentences from your content and quote them verbatim. The sentences that get cited best have:

Bad: “Lots of people use WhatsApp.” Good: “95% of Spaniards use WhatsApp daily, according to the INE 2025.”

Stable factual content

LLMs prefer content that does not change constantly. Reference guides, definitions, technical comparisons. News content performs worse in GEO because it quickly becomes outdated.

Tactics that DON’T work

Keyword stuffing

Repeating the keyword 30 times does not move the ranking in LLMs. The model understands semantics, not density.

PBNs, spam links and link farms do not fool the model. LLMs cross-reference sources and discard those with signs of manipulation.

AI-generated content without human editing

Ironically, LLMs detect unedited content from other LLMs and penalise it. The fingerprint of the training is recognisable. If you are going to use AI to write, it is essential to edit thoroughly, add verifiable data, and bring an original perspective.

Hidden text or cloaking

The crawlers from OpenAI and Anthropic process the final DOM. Hidden text, white-on-white text or cloaking is detected and gets the entire domain blocked.

15-point GEO checklist

  1. Complete Schema.org Organization in the root
  2. Person schema for authors with sameAs to verifiable profiles
  3. Product/Service schema for each service sold
  4. /llms.txt file with a structured summary
  5. Robots.txt allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot
  6. Complete Open Graph and Twitter Cards on every page
  7. Breadcrumbs with BreadcrumbList schema
  8. FAQ schema on pages with questions
  9. Article schema with author, date and datePublished
  10. Up-to-date XML sitemap linked in robots.txt
  11. Correct canonical URLs, with no duplicates
  12. Hierarchical headings H1-H6 with no skips
  13. Concrete data with cited sources in the body
  14. Stable factual content (more definition than news)
  15. Real contact information visible in the footer

If you meet 12 out of 15, you enter the citation range of the main LLMs within 4-8 weeks of indexing.

Useful tools for GEO

The STAKKER case: how we are positioning this page

This very page is optimised for GEO following the checklist. We expect to be cited for queries such as “what is GEO”, “Generative Engine Optimization Spain” or “how to appear in ChatGPT” within 6-10 weeks of publication. When that happens, we will update this article with the real citation data.

The state of stakker.es in GEO before publishing this article: 1 indexable page with 6 services, 0 blog articles, basic schema. After publishing this initial batch: 6 services + 4 pillar articles + complete schema. The improvement will be measured over 90 days.

What STAKKER SYSTEMS does in this area

STAKKER is not a GEO agency: our product is AI-powered customer service, an AI voice receptionist and an AI chat assistant for your website and WhatsApp. Everything you read in this guide is the technique we apply to stakker.es, our own laboratory: complete schema, llms.txt, FAQPage in every article and citable factual content.

If your question is how to win and look after the customers who already find you (through Google, through ChatGPT or wherever), that is where we do work with you: you have published reference prices and the initial diagnosis is free.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace classic SEO? No. SEO is still 80% of qualified traffic in most sectors. GEO is built on top of it.

How long does it take to see GEO results? Between 4 and 12 weeks, depending on the domain’s initial authority. New sites can take 6 months to appear in regular citations.

Do I have to block AI crawlers? No. Blocking them removes your presence in LLMs. The exception is if your business model is selling content (paywalled media).

Is Schema.org mandatory? For GEO, yes. Without structured data, the LLM has to infer everything from the HTML and citation quality drops.

Does GEO work in Spanish the same as in English? It works, but the English corpus is 10-20 times larger, so competition is proportionally lower in Spanish. It is a window of opportunity right now.

How do I measure the ROI of GEO? Tracking of referral traffic from AI domains (chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com), brand mentions in queries, and conversion of leads who say they saw the brand in an AI.
